Various Government Department have issues data related guidance for managing and utilizing data within public sector organizations. This guidance aims to ensure that data is handled responsibly, securely, and effectively to support decision-making, service delivery, and policy development. Guidance: Meet the requirements of data privacy regulations UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) outlines the definitions of key terms such as “controller” and “public authority,” and details the lawfulness of processing personal data, including provisions for public interest, child consent, and special categories of personal data. It also covers rights of data subjects, exemptions, and obligations related to automated decision-making and data transfers to third countries.

The Government Data Quality Framework

Published by the Data Quality Hub, this guidance document supports the main Data Quality Framework. It provides a set of practical tools and techniques which can be used to assess, communicate and improve data quality.

Data Ethics Framework

The Data Ethics Framework 2020 provides guidance for public sector organisations on using data responsibly and ethically. It outlines three overarching principles—transparency, accountability, and fairness—and includes specific actions to help teams improve ethical standards in their work. The framework is designed to be used throughout the planning, implementation, and evaluation of projects, ensuring that data use is appropriate, responsible, and aligned with legal and ethical standards.

Generative AI Framework for HMG

The Generative AI Framework for HMG provides guidance on using generative AI safely and securely within government organisations. It aims to help civil servants understand generative AI, guide the development of AI solutions, and outline considerations for responsible use. The framework emphasises the importance of being aware of risks, such as bias and misinformation, and adhering to principles like GDPR when using generative AI.

Make better use of data

The “Make Better Use of Data” guidance encourages public sector organisations to improve their technology, infrastructure, and processes to use data more effectively. It highlights the benefits of reusing open data, reducing errors and fraud, and providing a consistent experience for citizens. The guidance also stresses the importance of following data regulations, managing data throughout its lifecycle, and ensuring data accessibility and interoperability across government.

The Guidelines for AI Procurement document provides a set of principles and best practices for public sector organisations to follow when acquiring artificial intelligence technologies. It aims to help buyers evaluate suppliers, address challenges in procurement, and ensure the ethical and effective deployment of AI systems.
